This is the real reason you are addicted to coffee
This is the real reason you are addicted to coffeeThis is the real reason you are addicted to coffeeThough sometimes I think the real reason I am so addicted to coffee is because Starbucks lures me in with their jaunty tunes and festive holiday cups, it turns out I can blame something else for my caffeine dependency. According to a new study, it comes down to genetics.Researchers from Northwestern University in the U.S. and QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute in Australia looked at the link between how we perceive coffees bitter taste and how much of it we consume in over 400,000 coffee drinkers in England.Interestingly those were more sensitive to the bitterness of coffee actually drank more of it.Given humans generally avoid bitter tastes, we interpret these findings as possibly a learned behavior, co-author Dr Marilyn Cornelis, from Northwestern, told theGuardian. If we can perceive caffeine well we associate this with the psychostimulant properties of caffeine and so seek m ore coffee. And the reason certain people are more sensitive to the bitter taste is due to their genetics. So you can blame mom and dad for your coffee addiction and your grandparents

The Right Way to Suggest a Big Change at Work -The Muse
The Right Way to Suggest a Big Change at Work -The MuseThe Right Way to Suggest a Big Change at Work Everyone wants to be that person- the one who looks at the same information as everyone else, but who binnensees a fresh, innovative solution. However, it takes more than simply having a good idea. How you share it is as important as the suggestion itself. Why? Because writing a new script- literally or figuratively- means that other team members will have to adapt to something new. So whether youre suggesting a (seemingly) benign change like streamlining outdated protocol, or a bigger change like adding an hour to each workday so people can leave early on Fridays, youre asking others to reimagine their workflow or schedule. leid to mention, if the process your scrapping is one someone else suggested, theres the possibility of hurt feelings. To gain buy-in on an innovative, new idea, follow these eight steps1. Be a SalesmanGreat ideas dont stand alone. In other words, you cant mention your suggestion once and expect it to be adopted. To see a change, youll need to champion your plan and sell its merits. In addition, you need to be willing to stand up to scrutiny and criticism and be prepared to explain your innovation in different ways for various audiences.2. Give it TimeSo, you want to clearly and fully explain your thinking, but then you need to give people time for consideration. Creative genius could strike at any time, but implementation can take months or even years- as was the case with hand washing and sterilization in hospitals. 3. Use ChannelsSometimes it makes sense to go to your boss first. But other times, its useful to build a coalition among your co-workers or other stakeholders. When it works, it works great- because youre ready for your stubborn supervisors pushback with answers like, Actually, I connected with a few people in our tech department to discuss how much time these kinds of website updates would take, and they suggested they have the bandwidth. However, just be certain you can explain your end-around approach as one that built your case, rather than simply circumvented your manager. The last thing you want is for your boss to feel embarrassed he wasnt informed- which could lead him to quash the idea before it even takes off.4. Be HumbleOne of the biggest barriers to gaining buy-in occurs when the owner of an idea is viewed as argumentative, defensive, or close-minded. Because, lets be honest No one likes a know-it-all. So, if people disagree with you, dont be indignant. Instead, listen to their concerns fully, try to understand their perspective, and include their concerns (and possible remedies) in future discussions. So, instead of saying, Martha, our current slogan is confusing and should be updated, you could try, Martha raises a great point that our current slogan has a long history for our stakeholders, but I wonder if we might able to brainstorm a tagline that could build on that- and be clearer for new c ustomers.5. Dont Mistake Disagreement for Personal RejectionYes, it can hurt when you present a brilliant suggestion and are shot down. It can feel territorial, even personal. However, unless you have a sworn mortal enemy in your office, someone rejecting your idea probably isnt meant as a personal attack. Getting too attached and having it become my idea pulls focus from what your innovation really is- a suggestion that will better things for the entire team, company, or project. Dont let ownership prevent you from listening to valid concerns and criticism. 6. Expect (and Invite) ResistanceAnother reason to really engage with the naysayers? New ideas can only be adopted as quickly as the culture of the organization will allow them. Innovations often represent change or a new, unfamiliar paradigm. So, explore peoples dissent and disagreement- thats part of helping them learn to accept change.7. Respect the Past, But Dont Get Stuck ThereNew ideas are the grandchildren of old ones. In other words, dont throw old solutions under the bus to make your improvement stand out. Remember that in light of whatever the problem the old system solved- or, maybe, has failed to solve in recent memory- it was a great idea at the time. Appreciating the older contributions as you suggest future innovations helps bolster the credibility of your idea. 8. Stay PositiveWhen pitching a new idea, its important use the language of abundance instead of the language of deficit. Instead of saying what is wrong, broken, or suboptimal, talk about what is right, fixable, or ideal. For example, try, I can see lots of applications for this new approach rather than, This innovation is the only way. Be optimistic but realistic, and you will stand out. There is rarely value in pointing out a problem without also offering a solution. Innovation isnt seeing the problem, it is being able to see a viable solution to the issue. So, use the steps above to pitch your new idea- they should help you overco me the barriers to buy-in so that people will be on board and excited.Photo of team meeting courtesy of Shutterstock.

4 steps to 5-minute meetings
4 steps to 5-minute meetings 4 steps to 5-minute meetings Recently, The Wall Street Journal ran an article highlighting the trend toward shorter meetings - and by shorter meetings, they meant some that ran only five minutes long. Many of those on the C Level quoted in the piece expressed their desire to cut things shorter and get to the point in what was referred to as a âwar on meeting bloat.â The takeaway being that â[p]articipants must learn to distill their ideas and requests to the conference-room equivalent of an elevator pitch.âBut is that always the best approach?People have been complaining about the way meeting seem to be huge time wasters without accomplishing much, but the reality of business life seems to indicate that five-minute meetings are pretty tough to pull off. That said, trying to cut the bloat from your own meetings might lead to more effective meetings and less time wasted during your day.Inspired enough to cut down the length of your own seemingly endless meetings?Ethan Rasiel, CEO of Lightspeed PR, previou sly oversaw communications for Samsung USA and had some tips on making meetings more efficient and less time consuming.Have an agendaA lot of meeting attendees complain about the feeling that the meeting is going no place. If youâre calling in co-workers or employees, respect their time and your own by creating a plan and outline and sticking to it. Raisel says, âI know people that simply donât show up to meetings if there isnât one. This ensures the meeting has a purpose.âTo make it easier, try to prioritize the most important issues so that even if your meeting ends briefly, youâve still covered crucial issues.Brevity is kingRasiel suggested that you work on being more concise, since thatâs the biggest challenge people have in meetings. âUse the Twitter philosophy â" speak in short bursts,â he says. âEveryone will appreciate this, AND youâll be better understood.âThat said, if youâre going to take inspiration from social media, try not to use cutesy ling o or acronyms that might be confusing to those in the room. Keep your tone modulated and your words clearly spoken - just try to use fewer of them!Donât take a seatRasiel says that he likes to conduct all his meetings while standing.âI like to do all meetings standing up. These make them go 10x quicker,â he says. âEven those dialing in can be asked to stand. This also gives everyone more energy.âIn an office where everyone already uses standing desks for all or part of their workday, this can be a no-brainer, but for others this could be slightly awkward at first. If you plan on introducing standing meetings, try opening your meeting by offering participants the challenge of taking a stand and explain why - and then see where it goes.Tie everything to actionRasiel believes that every statement should be tied to an action item. âDonât just make observations,â he says. âTalk about what we can DO.âThis will require planning on your part. If you hope to motivate pa rticipants, offer them challenges to solve throughout their workday or leading into the next meeting. And be prepared to allot some time to bad ideas, since not all options are fantastic on the first time around.Of course, itâs not for everyoneâ¦Whatever you end up doing, itâs also important to realize that not every industry can thrive with only five-minute get-togethers and some might require meetings more often.Try out different length meetings and see if you can accomplish more in less time.

10 ways smart people work less and get more done
10 ways smart people work less and get more done 10 ways smart people work less and get more done Some people have an uncanny ability to get things done. They keep their nights and weekends sacred and still get more done than people who work 10 or 20 hours more per week than they do.A study from Stanford shows that they are on to something. The study found that productivity per hour declines sharply when the workweek exceeds 50 hours, and productivity drops off so much after 55 hours that thereâs no point in working any more.Thatâs right, people who work as much as 70 hours (or more) per week actually get the same amount done as people who work 55 hours.âTime is what we want most, but what we use worst.â - William PennSmart people know the importance of shifting gears on the weekend to relaxing and rejuvenating activities. They use their weekends to create a better week ahead. This is easier said than done, so hereâs some help. The following are some things that you can do to find balance on the weekend and come into work at 110% on Monday morning.1. DisconnectDisconne cting is the most important weekend strategy, because if you canât find a way to remove yourself electronically from your work Friday evening through Monday morning, then youâve never really left work. Making yourself available to your work 24/7 exposes you to a constant barrage of stressors that prevent you from refocusing and recharging. If taking the entire weekend off handling work e-mails and calls isnât realistic, try designating specific times on Saturday and Sunday for checking e-mails and responding to voicemails. For example, check your messages on Saturday afternoon while your kids are getting a haircut and on Sunday evenings after dinner. Scheduling short blocks of time will alleviate stress without sacrificing availability.2. Minimize choresChores have a funny habit of completely taking over your weekends. When this happens, you lose the opportunity to relax and reflect. Whatâs worse is that a lot of chores feel like work, and if you spend all weekend doing them, you just put in a seven-day workweek. To keep this from happening, you need to schedule your chores like you would anything else during the week, and if you donât complete them during the allotted time, you move on and finish them the following weekend.3. ExerciseNo time to exercise during the week? You have 48 hours every weekend to make it happen. Getting your body moving for as little as 10 minutes releases GABA, a soothing neurotransmitter that reduces stress.Exercise is also a great way to come up with new ideas. Innovators and other successful people know that being outdoors often sparks creativity. I know that a lot of my best ideas come to me while Iâm surfing. While youâre out in the ocean, the combination of invigorating activity and beautiful scenery creates the perfect environment for an influx of creativity.Whether youâre running, cycling, or gardening, exercise leads to endorphin-fueled introspection. The key is to find a physical activity that does this for yo u and then to make it an important part of your weekend routine.4. ReflectWeekly reflection is a powerful tool for improvement. Use the weekend to contemplate the larger forces that are shaping your industry, your organization, and your job. Without the distractions of Monday to Friday busy work, you should be able to see things in a whole new light.Use this insight to alter your approach to the coming week, improving the efficiency and efficacy of your work.5. Pursue a passionYou might be surprised what happens when you pursue something youâre passionate about on weekends. Indulging your passions is a great way to escape stress and to open your mind to new ways of thinking.Things like playing music, reading, writing, painting, or even playing catch with your kids can help stimulate different modes of thought that can reap huge dividends over the coming week.6. Spend quality time with familySpending quality time with your family on the weekend is essential if you want to recharge and relax. Weekdays are so hectic that the entire week can fly by with little quality family time. Donât let this bleed into your weekends.Take your kids to the park, take your spouse to his or her favorite restaurant, and go visit your parents. Youâll be glad you did.7. Schedule micro-adventuresBuy tickets to a concert or play, or get reservations for that cool new hotel that just opened downtown. Instead of running on a treadmill, plan a hike. Try something you havenât done before or perhaps something you havenât done in a long time.Studies show that anticipating something good to come is a significant part of what makes the activity pleasurable. Knowing that you have something interesting planned for Saturday will not only be fun come Saturday, but it will significantly improve your mood throughout the week.8. Wake up at the same timeItâs tempting to sleep in on the weekend to catch up on your sleep. Though it feels good temporarily, having an inconsistent wake-up time disturbs your circadian rhythm. Your body cycles through an elaborate series of sleep phases in order for you to wake up rested and refreshed. One of these phases involves preparing your mind to be awake and alert, which is why people often wake up just before their alarm clock goes off (the brain is trained and ready). When you sleep past your regular wake-up time on the weekend, you end up feeling groggy and tired. This isnât just disruptive to your day off, it also makes you less productive on Monday because your brain isnât ready to wake up at your regular time. If you need to catch up on sleep, just go to bed earlier.9. Designate mornings as me timeIt can be difficult to get time to yourself on the weekends, especially if you have family. Finding a way to engage in an activity youâre passionate about first thing in the morning can pay massive dividends in happiness and cleanliness of mind. Itâs also a great way to perfect your circadian rhythm by forcing yourself to wa ke up at the same time you do on weekdays.Your mind achieves peak performance two-to-four hours after you wake up, so get up early to do something physical, and then sit down and engage in something mental while your mind is at its peak.10. Prepare for the upcoming weekThe weekend is a great time to spend a few moments planning your upcoming week. As little as 30 minutes of planning can yield significant gains in productivity and reduced stress. The week feels a lot more manageable when you go into it with a plan because all you have to focus on is execution.Bringing it all togetherWhat do you do to make your weekends great? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.Travis Bradberry is the coauthor of Emotional Intelligence 2.0 and the cofounder of TalentSmart. This article originally appeared on LinkedIn. 10 ways smart people work less and get more done Some people have an uncanny ability to get things done. How Product Pricing Really Works
How Product Pricing Really Works How Product Pricing Really Works Most people think of prices as an extension of a companys greed. In other words, the common perception is that when a given product is expensive, its because the companies that make it want to get as much profit as they can. In reality, businesses dont have full control over the prices they charge. Prices in a capitalist economy are based on supply and demand, not greed. Why the Price? An items high price is a symptom, not a disease. The real culprit is cost. A company that makes and sells hairbrushes cant arbitrarily set its price at $1000 a brush because no one would buy them; dozens of other hairbrush manufacturers have already set prices lower than that. So an items price cant exceed the price set by other companies that make that item. A company can only set its price higher than average if it can come up with an explanation- luxury materials, for example, or a product that works faster or more reliably than others. To stay in business, a company must have a price that is higher than its costs to make that product. Otherwise, it will lose money on every unit it sells. A company is bound to use a price thats similar to its competitors. The only thing that it can control is its costs. So companies use the most efficient and cheapest ways to manufacture and sell their products, to make enough of a profit to thrive. A company that comes up with a cheaper way to make its product has the option of either keeping the price at the same level or else passing the savings on to consumers by dropping its prices. In practice, companies almost always choose to lower prices. The reason is that lower-than-normal prices without a drop in quality will attract huge numbers of customers who normally buy from competitors. By increasing its market share (the percentage of consumers who buy from one company in particular), it can make much higher profits than it would by leaving the price the same. Price and Competition Of course, the companys lower prices and increasing market share will immediately goad its competitors into lowering their prices in response. Same with penetration pricing. Some of those competitors will find ways to lower their costs and stay in business, while others wont be able to do so and will end up bankrupt. The final result is a lower price overall. So while any one company would love to charge a higher price, as a group the businesses in a given industry force each other to offer the lowest possible prices. On rare occasions, a group of competitors in the same industry will agree to all charge the same (high) price. This arrangement is called a cartel and is illegal in many countries, the USA included. Not only do cartels put businesses at risk by opening them up to prosecution for breaking anti-trust laws, but they are also inherently unstable. Sooner or later one of the members will cheat and offer a lower price to entice customers, forcing its competitors to do the same. Sometimes a government or other legal group will intervene by setting an artificially low price on a certain product, as the USA did in the 1970s on gasoline. The result is always a shortage of that product that causes more pain for consumers than the price increase ever could. The artificially low prices cause companies to shift their inventory to other markets where they legally can charge higher prices. Again, this is not because of greed, but because in many cases the companies simply cant stay in business at those prices, so they have no choice but to find a new market or perish. The only way to truly lower prices is by lowering the cost to make that product. Trying to fix the problem by setting a low price is like dunking a thermometer in ice water and declaring the fever cured.

This is the exact exercise you must do if you want to be happier with your job
This is the exact exercise you must do if you want to be happier with your job This is the exact exercise you must do if you want to be happier with your job There will never be too many ways to cope with the incessant overly reported work-related stressors. Over a lifetime, the average American will spend a collective 13 years and two months at work. Thatâs 13 years of pressing deadlines, staffing off fierce competition, and physical demands.Thankfully researchers are perpetually trying to figure out ways to keep us from Howard Hughes-ing ourselves into early retirement. The latest attempt comes from The Journal Of Leadership and Management. Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Laddersâ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Breaking the cycleThe findings within the new study champion high-intensity workouts as a reliable means of both decreasing overall stress and boosting levels of job satisfaction. The more intense the workout, the greater the stress reduction. The studyâs lead author, Christopher Neck, Ph.D., an associate professor at Arizona State University, Tempe, summ arized to Bicycling.com, âWhat the findings show is that as exercise intensity goes up, it has a significant relationship on lowering stress and increasing job satisfaction,â Ladders recently covered a report indexing the severely underreported depression statistics amongst entrepreneurs. A staggering two-thirds of business owners experience depression at least once a week. Twenty-five percent of respondents in this very same study reported exercising more frequently in order to cope with their work stress. Being responsible for your own revenue stream comes with distinct and often extremely taxing challenges. The researchers behind the study published in The Journal of Leadership and Management were well aware of the anxiety infecting these members of the economy. The authors make a point to note the unique psychological obstacles facing business owners, including the worry that they are unable to meet demands and expectations, the fear that theyâve basically bit off f ar more than they can chew, and are only realizing it after committing to their respective venture. The researchers began the study by taking seven common types of workout routines into account: Weight training, competitive sports, aerobics, running, cycling, walking, and yoga. They then surveyed 470 entrepreneurs about which kinds of exercise regimens they adhered to the most often and for how long, before generating an exercise intensity metric based on guidelines from the CDC. By multiplying the reported intensity of each activity and the length each was performed they found that business owners that reported the highest figures dually experienced the least stress. Canât think of a better way to break a sweat, increase muscle strength and flexibility, and reduce stress than cycling- the activity that offered the most significant benefits in the study period. Reductions in stress also offered a 19% boost to job satisfaction. âFrequent, long, challenging exercise is worth i t for entrepreneurs, even with their busy schedules. Time working out is time away from the business but itâs a healthy trade-off. Itâs not going to hurt your business and itâs going to be good for you,â added Neck.

Here are the 7 Reasons Why LinkedIn is Important
Here are the 7 Reasons Why LinkedIn is Important Here are the 7 Reasons Why LinkedIn is Important Why LinkedIn is Important: 7 Reasons to Polish Your Profile Today Youâve heard LinkedIn is important, but is it actually? And if so, why? We take a deep dive into the networking platform. Did you know that LinkedIn, the professional social networking platform, has actually been around longer than Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, and Instagram? But it's more relevant now than ever. Why? Because it hosts more than 500 million professional profiles, which means nearly an unlimited supply of network connections and job opportunities. From seeking a new job to maintaining your personal brand, LinkedIn is an important part of being a full-fledged professional in any industry these days. Here are seven important reasons to create a LinkedIn profile or dust off your long-forgotten one. 1. You can tap into its powerful job board Why is LinkedIn important for job seekers? You'll find a number of reasons in this list, but let's start at square one: You can search its robust job board and even apply to jobs through the networking platform. Search jobs by keywords and location. Even if you're not actively seeking new employment, you can set job alerts based on your career interests to regularly receive email updates and stay in the loop. You can also be sneaky about it. If you're connected with co-workers and managers, turn on your I'm interested button, which will let recruiters know you're open to hearing about new opportunities. LinkedIn will hide this open invitation from folks at your current company. With LinkedIn's premium account, you can access more information about job openings, but it's not necessary if you don't want to splurge on the $29.99 monthly fee. 2. You can build your brand Just like companies build their brands, it's important for you to build your professional brand online. How do you stand out from others in your industry? What makes you marketable? Why should someone pay you six figures? Personal websites are great for this, but they often come with extra costs and hours and hours of building and finessing. LinkedIn is a simple way to put your name on the professional map. Upload a professional profile picture and write a powerful summary that emphasizes your strengths and showcases your personality. When recruiters, employers, co-workers, and managers peruse your profile, they should be able to gain a strong understanding of who you are and what skills you bring to the table. 3. It can help rank your name on Google Chances are, if you apply to a job, one of the first things an employer will do is Google your name. Even emailing a new client could result in a Google sweep of your name. If you've never Google'd yourself, now's the time. What pops up on the first page of results? Here's why LinkedIn is important: Ranking on Google's first page can be difficult, but LinkedIn is a well-known and powerful network and Google's into it. Because of that, it's typically easier to get your LinkedIn page to rank on Google versus your homemade website or online portfolio. If your LinkedIn profile is the first thing a prospective employer will see, then maybe it's time to get one ... or edit your existing one to stand out among the crowd. Related: Why You Should Google Yourself to Monitor Your Online Personal Brand 4. It maintains your Rolodex of contacts Remember that awesome young professional you met at that conference three years ago? Or that friend of a friend who was interested in freelancing for your company? Honestly, probably not. Rather than stuffing their business cards in your desk drawer or adding their email addresses to your outdated address book, add these folks on LinkedIn when you meet them. Keep them in your connections so one day you can reconnect when the time's right. 5. You can research companies and its employees Sure, if you're applying for jobs you can access openings from other job boards; there are plenty of those out there. However, LinkedIn offers other perks. These days, many companies maintain their own LinkedIn pages where they'll update company information, share company news and insight, and showcase current employees. If the company knows what it's doing, you should get a good, solid feel for its culture and its people to make sure it's a fit for you before diving into the interview process or accepting a job. 6. It can help you tap into industry news Like other social networks, LinkedIn aggregates a timeline when you log in. There, you'll find news updates from your connections, your groups, and your company. It's both fun and wise to keep tabs on industry trends and reports. 7. Network, network, network! Can we emphasize this enough? LinkedIn is such an important networking tool. Even if you're an introvert and hate networking events, you can still foster meaningful LinkedIn connections. Through LinkedIn, you can build a relationship with mutual connections, folks in your field, and even your greatest role models. In conclusion If you were wondering how important LinkedIn could actually be, then hopefully this list convinced you it's one of your most powerful professional tools. With it, you can build and maintain your network, search for jobs, and build your professional reputation. Plus it's free, and it only takes about 30 minutes to create a profile. So why wait? This is why companies like Apple hide their coolest jobs from you
This is why companies like Apple hide their coolest jobs from you This is why companies like Apple hide their coolest jobs from you Did you find your current position from a job posting or by word of mouth? Are you having trouble looking for a new job because positions are hidden? Come discuss at Laddersâ Facebook Group, The Climb. As any job-seekers suspect, itâs no secret that many job listings are secret. In fact, the majority of American job ads exist in a shadow world where few people ever get to see them. Some job analysts even estimate that as many as 80% of jobs go unpublicized.Even worse? Itâs not an inefficiency in the job market. Some of Americaâs biggest and best companies hide their best jobs from you on purpose. On Friday, ZDNet cybersecurity reporter Zack Whittaker found this out for himself. Using a traffic analyzer, Whittaker said he was monitoring iPhone app data when he noticed that some of the data was connecting to one, repeated web address. Curious, Whittaker typed the URL into a browser, and found something unexpected - a job listing.https://twitter.com/zackwhittaker/status/898646739657379840âHey there! You found us,â the listing begins. âWe are looking for talented engineer to develop a critical infrastructure component.âOnce Whitaker found it, Apple took the job listing un derground again. The website announcing the Apple engineer job has since been pulled and now leads to a error page. You can see an archived version of the ad here.Although Whittaker maintains that âthere was little proficiency needed to find the page,â you do need technical expertise beyond Googling to find the ad. It take active curiosity of Appleâs inner workings to find the listing.Importantly, that curiosity is what companies are looking for. Companies donât want a huge volume of applicants. For employers who hide jobs like this, itâs a way of weeding out passive job applicants mass-emailing their resume. If a job seeker finds the unpublicized job listing on the companyâs servers, it demonstrates that theyâre actively engaged and curious about what the company is doing.Companies donât want to know what seats youâve sat in and what titles you have held. They want to know what kind of problems you can solve for them.Finding a hidden job listing shows that youâ re actively curiousThis is not the first time that a tech giant has hidden job listings. In 2015, Max Rosett wrote about how he typed coding terms into Googleâs search browser and one of the search results asked if he was âup for a challenge?â Rosett was. Over the course of several weeks, he completed a series of puzzles and problems that eventually led to a job offer, which he accepted. Rosett was a fan of the unusual job hunt, calling it a âbrilliant recruiting tacticâ¦they made me feel important while doing so,â Rosett wrote.Puzzles arenât the greatest recruiting strategyWhile most people can see the appeal of a scavenger hunt, itâs a deeply flawed idea that the best candidates are mystical magi searching for hidden mysteries, and who will swoop in with a wand to fix all a companyâs problems. For instance, Google made a name for itself in the engineering world with its famous mind-bending puzzles that few people could solve. The only problem? The company eventuall y admitted the puzzles were a total waste of time.Who gets left out of hidden job listingsItâs not just hidden listings. Companies create different kinds of social puzzles to limit candidate pools: elaborate tryouts, multiple interviews, and infamously, crazy interview questions that purport to expose your very soul. The secret that many companies know: Itâs all haphazard. Finding good candidates is often a matter of chance, and running candidates through elaborate hoops only gives managers the illusion of control over a process thatâs as bewildering to them as it is to you.As a result, hiding a job listing may not actually find the best people, any more than IQ tests or SAT scores do. People may be good at certain kinds of tests - or at trawling the internet - but that doesnât make them great workers or teammates.Even more worrisome is that clever little job-hiding tactics designed as âin-jokesâ for a few people could leave out great candidates. If youâre a boss and you rely on word-of-mouth to find your next hire, you are limiting your candidates to only the people you know and the people your friends know. The best candidate is not always the son of an acquaintance or the friend of a friend. That echo chamber is why critics of unpublicized hiring note that it prevents inclusive, diverse hiring practices that lead to better products and better teams.âJob descriptions matter. Start with having one thatâs publicly available,â Stacy-Marie Ishmael wrote in a Medium post that criticized the practice of unpublished job listings. âThereâs an insidious practice of folks simply emailing their contacts and saying, âweâre hiring for X, know anyone?â and never posting a job description.âIn the case of the Apple engineer job, the listing was public, just hidden. It was publicly accessibly to anyone who had the curiosity to look through Appleâs servers. In this case, if you had the time to browse through a server like it was a treasure hunt, you were actually rewarded for your time and effort with a potential job.The most amazing part of all this is that if companies want the best candidates, thereâs a well-established way to do it: write good job descriptions. Most job-seekers only scan a job listing for 49.7 seconds before deciding they wonât be a good fit. Many women, in particular, shy away from job listings that emphasize aggressive words. Rather than puzzles and games, perhaps the best way to get good candidates is to tell them exactly what the job entails, and save everyone involved a lot of time.So what can job candidates actually do? Hereâs a quick list. Forget about searching for hidden job listings. You have better things to do with your time. Strengthen your career network so you can hear about jobs that come up by word of mouth Donât apply for jobs as a numbers game. Think carefully about why a certain company or job is the right one for you, and concentrate your energy on making your case. If you donât hear back, see if you know anyone at the company who can put in a word for you. (See tip number 2) Always demonstrate curiosity about your work. At industry events or conferences, ask questions and find out what the next big thing is. Youâll develop a great reputation that will make companies want you, and youâll be able to sustain impressive conversations in an interview. Follow up after you meet someone cool at a networking event. Donât just ask to pick someoneâs brain in an email, be specific about what youâre trying to get out of an interaction. An informational interview? A job? Say that. Being succinct and direct works better than soul-baring, rambling emails. Tell everyone you know that youâre looking for a job. People canât give you advice or tips unless they know that youâre looking. As one Ladders reader advised about job hunting after layoffs, âCall everyone. You never know who has a good contact, who has admired your work from afar.â Did you find your current position from a job posting or by word of mouth? Are you having trouble looking for a new job because positions are hidden? Come discuss at Laddersâ Facebook Group, The Climb.

7 ways to improve your productivity at the office
7 ways to improve your productivity at the office 7 ways to improve your productivity at the office In the final quarter of 2016, it was reported that productivity in the U.S. economy had increased 1.3%. While this might seem like a small number, this was treated as truly excellent news by economists. This is because thereâs no doubt that productivity is one of the most important numbers for the growth of the economy.Of course, productivity is a complicated issue that can be affected by anything from lack of investment in staff to underfunding training and equipment. But if youâre interested in improving productivity in your office, here are seven great ways to get started.1. Set mini deadlines for tasksOne really valuable way to work is to set yourself a self-imposed deadline for each task you want to complete. You will probably have a reasonable idea of how long it should take you to do a task that you do on a regular basis, so give yourself that amount of time to complete it and reward yourself with a break when you do.2. Take breaks regularlySpeaking of breaks, definitely a good idea to take a break from your desk as often as possible. While you might think that taking time away from your desk might give you less time to get things done, the opposite is actually true. Taking a short break allows you to relax and then re-establish your concentration. If you try to work for too long without taking a break youâll actually end up wasting time daydreaming because youâre not focused.3. Leave your desk for lunchThe same logic applies when it comes to lunch breaks. Many workers believe that if they take their lunch at their desk they will be more productive, but the truth is that itâs a much better idea to give yourself a proper lunch break to get your head away from work. You can then recharge and get ready for the afternoon properly. The last thing you want is hit a wall and then lose motivation to continue working.4. Set yourself a schedule for tomorrowItâs a great idea to spend a few minutes every day deciding and planning what you are going to do the next day. Set yourself out with a schedule so that you can get on with your work immediately when you come in. It can be easy to come in and spend a significant amount of time just deciding on what to do. Doing in the day before means you can be productive from the start. You can use software like Planday to get on top of your schedule every night.5. Deal with emails at specific timesEmails can be a real productivity killer. Many workers try to deal with emails as they come in, and while this can ensure that they get looked at immediately, it can also mean they eat into your time. Answering emails not only takes time but it can completely take you out of the flow of what you have been doing. It then becomes harder to get back into it. Instead of working on emails as they come in, set aside a time, perhaps at the end of a task to go through the emails you have received and reply.6. Avoid unnecessary meetingsAnother scourge of productivity are meetings. Thereâs no doubt tha t some meetings are extremely important and can play a crucial role in the business, but this is not always the case. We have all experienced meetings that serve little function other than to take you away from your work. If thereâs not a vital reason to attend a meeting then donât go.7. Get enough sleepFinally, remember that your productivity can also come down to your health. One of the best ways to be productive is to be alert and well rested during your working hours. So make sure that you get enough sleep every night. This post was originally published on BossedUp.org.
